THE HAYNER DNA PROJECT CONTINUES

We have currently received results for eleven participants, and there are two others whose test results have not yet come in. Seven of the eleven participants are in the line of Johannes Häner born about 1675 in Storndorf, Hesse, who emigrated to the United States, arriving in New York in 1709. Of these seven, five spell their name Hayner and two spell it Haner.  Three of the participants are listed as direct descendants of Johannes in the third edition of A Haner/Hayner Family in America: Clifford Hayner of Rochester, New York, President of the Hayner Family Association; Darwin G. Haner of California; and George Scott Hayner of the Seattle area.  Four other participants were previously listed in unconnected lines and are now known to be part of the Johannes Haner line. These are John Haner of Redding, California, who is listed in the “R” (Russel Haner) line; Keith James Hayner and Harry Hayner, distant cousins who both live in the Kansas City area and who are in the “J” (James Hayner) line; and Bruce Jon Hayner of the Chicago area, who is listed in the “A” (Martinus P. Haner) line.  Now researchers in those lines should be looking for the links that will merge the Russel Haner, James Hayner, and Martinus P. Haner lines into the Johannes line. The haplotype (the set of genes or markers on one chromosome that are inherited together) on the Johannes line is E3B1.

We also have two participants from the T (Albert Hainer) line. We only have results back so far on one of these people, and we are awaiting results on the other.  So far, this line has proven to be separate from that of Johannes.  The haplotype on this line is I1.  We have three other participants who fit into the R1 haplotype.  However, only one of those has taken the 37-marker test.  The other two have only taken a 12-marker test. This means there are not enough markers tested to be able to predict relationships at this time.

Since we have three distinct haplotypes, we know that there are at least three distinct and separate lines and at least three separate ancestors from which these same Hayner/Haner/Hainer names descend.  You are eligible to be tested for the project if you are a male with the surname Hayner/Haner/Hainer or any other variant spelling and were not adopted.  If you are a female in a Hayner, etc., line, you can sponsor or persuade a male relative with the Hayner, etc., surname to participate.  For details, contact Valerie Hayner Auld at vhauld@aol.com or join our DNA group directly at http://www.familytreedna.com/public/hayner.
